Disconnect the shift cable at the converter box, remove the retainer clip on the outside of the intermediate housing, loosen up the cable in the passageway thru the IH and remove the whole drive. It is a lot easier that way.

You should replace the entire pump kit. It sounds like the unit wasn't maintained all that well. It would be a good idea to reseal the entire upper gear housing.
